Enviro schools

The Enviroschools programme supports our students to plan, design and implement sustainability actions that are important to us and our community.

Enviroschools is supported by a national team, in partnership with around 100 national and regional partners, including the majority of New Zealand’s councils.

We are one of over 100 Enviroschools nationwide who are building strong relationships and sharing and reflecting together, and growing a collective puna mātauranga or pool of knowledge.

Some refer to Enviroschools as a movement for positive change in this country towards a generation of innovative and motivated young people who instinctively think and act sustainably.

Enviro School - Library Extension Project

Library Garden Extension with the support of Waikato regional Council grant of over $4,000 and full support of our BoT.

 WHY?

The key purpose of this mahi is to educate students, staff and community on sustainable and regenerative practises. Our key activities are to extend existing gardens, create a seed growing space (greenhouse and potting out area). The gardens will focus on kai for consumption at school and creating seedling plants for our perspective native tree area and orchard. Our vision is to have whole school involvement, from development, nursery work through to the preparation and cooking of kai. As we are an area school, senior students can design, build, and maintain the area. Parents, volunteer organisations and businesses are already expressing an interest in supporting new ventures around environmental education.

HOW?

We hope our community will be involved with every step of our journey, for example we already have volunteers from the community coming forward to work with us and share their knowledge. Because this will be a community garden, it will encourage the reciprocal learning.

We already have some community support in the way of expertise around composting, dynamic soil care and pest control around the school. The groups that are currently assisting us in a variety of ways are Coromandel’s local community garden, Moehau Environment Group and other experts in the horticultural/environmental fields. The opportunity for different sectors of the community to come together, sharing knowledge, wisdom and experience provides our students and community members with rich educational and cultural exchanges. Our community is made up of such a rich diversity, including retired, professionals, tangata whenua, full time parents and grandparents to name a few. They can help accelerate and transform children’s joy of learning and provide a platform for rich experiences.

We have applied for a number of grants and received the Treemendous grant fund for our native learning outdoor space. The Coromandel Board of Trustees have supported us with $1,000 and Waikato Regional Council have donated over $4,000 for our garden extension project.
