Gateway
Gateway is a programme that is fully funded by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) with no cost to either the student or employer.
It provides our students with structured workplace learning across a wide range of local businesses, industries and organisations, which they continue to study at school. Gateway work placements usually commence in Term 1 and 2, with a view to being completed by the end of Term 3.
Students usually attend their Gateway placements for 1 day per week, for 5-10 weeks. There are also options to complete placements during the school holidays and weekends.
The programme requires that the students complete a minimum of 20 credits, towards NCEA Level 2 or 3.
The purpose of Gateway is to enable schools to provide senior students (Years 11–13+) with opportunities to access structured workplace learning that has:
a formalised learning arrangement set in the workplace
specified knowledge and skills that a student will attain
specified assessment methods (workplace learning).
Gateway allows our students to:
Experience the workplace in the real world
Customise their learning to meet their needs
Develop life skills
Build links with our community
Try out potential career options
At Coromandel Area School we align our Gateway programmes to the Vocational Pathways, where possible. The Vocational Pathways provide a useful tool for course planning to provide cohesive learning options that are recommended by industry.
To be eligible students need to:
Be in Year 11, 12 or 13.
Have a good attendance record.
Have parental approval and support.
Be able to keep up with their other subject work, whilst out on placements.
Be EPIC ambassadors for our kura.
We are currently funded for 6 Gateway placements per year.
